You could always depend on those lilacs when I was a kid. It seems I always gave my mom lilacs for Mother’s Day. Such has not been the case over the last three years. Two years ago the weather was warm and the lilacs bloomed well before Mother’s Day. Last year they hardly bloomed by June and this year the lilacs will probably not bloom for at least another week or more.
It seems that there was a lot more “normal” when I was young. There was normal spring weather, normal frost- free dates, and normal garden planting. Certainly we had lots of extremes and record cold and heat but Mother’s Day always seemed normal with lilacs available.
At least we still have the normal blooms in the greenhouse, ready to ship out to give mom a normal holiday.
