With the government shutdown in place we hear that there may be no USDA inspections of meat. The implication is that it might cause meat shortages. I am happy that we do our own meat inspection around here. In fact I have been inspecting the wild meat all summer as the game runs wild and free around our place and the surrounding countryside.
We have spent the summer growing and storing our vegetables from our garden. Now as the first frosts whiten the morning fields our attention turns to procuring some meat for the winter. Game seems to be a very wholesome and delicious source of lean meat. The good news is that we process the meat ourselves and do the final inspection before packaging it for the freezer. We are the epitome of local inspection, and I believe that the shutdown will not affect meat supplies here in rural flyover country.
