The sun and green plants have worked together all summer to produce a store of sugar. Now on the last flowers blooming, bees gather the fall sweetness to sustain them through the winter. As cool nights and heavy, sparkling dews greet us, we gather the harvest as well. We have mostly picked and crushed our grape crop, cut the sweet squash, and dug the golden sweet potatoes. We still feast upon the sweetest onion varieties before the season of the longer-keeping, more pungent varieties is upon us.
