Just Ducky

The cold, wet spring of 2019 is still hanging on.  Roads are closed by high water and fields are still covered by last season’s crop stubble and this spring’s water.  After an early winter which was cold and snowy, we are now greeted by a late, wet spring.  Planting is way behind normal and each day of rain and cool temperatures gives area farmers less options for the season.

As I researched my book “God in a God-Forsaken Land,” I found that the spring of 1873 was also very cold and wet.  Many farmers in this area never were able to plant their crops in that disastrous year.  Life in flyover country has always involved fluctuating weather patterns and along with that, tough decisions.

There does seem to be a large number of nesting ducks in the area. Big, silly-looking webbed feet can sometimes be an advantage.
