Last Ice

Here in northern flyover country we focus upon the two most stunning changes to our landscape.  We meticulously keep track of the “freeze-up” dates when our lakes freeze over for winter and of course the dates when our lakes open back up.  Both occurrences impact us and most lakes have many years of statistics regarding these events.

We are now approaching “last-ice” in our area.  The bets ae all on regarding when various lakes will be free of ice.  We are calculating the wind intensity and predicted temperatures.  It will indeed be soon, releasing waves once again upon the surface of area lakes and opening the boating season and the summer fishing seasons.

We no longer walk on water but float on it.  No longer do we worry about people falling through ice, but we worry about people falling out of boats.  Soon we will embark upon “the open-water season.”  It usually brings back a species we call the “snow birds.”  Contrary to what the name implies; they don’t like snow.
